PAGAN ADAPTATIONS

of the

ROMAN CATHOLIC ROSARY

It is the position of Pagan Universalism that we have much to learn and much to teach in our dialog with other religions. We do not hesitate to respectfully adapt methods that we find useful from other religions. Prayer beads are an ancient an pre-Christian prayer/meditation practice and it is possible that the Christian rosary was borrowed from Eastern sources (Hindu rosaries, for example, have 27, 54 or 108 beads. The Catholic rosary has 54).

The rosary is an old meditative practice that falls under the aegis of the Goddess as Mother Mary, a figure who has absorbed many of the qualities of pre-Christian Goddesses and who is venerated by Catholics as "Queen of Heaven" and "Mother of God". We may adapt it to the veneration of other Gods and Goddesses. The links below show how various individuals and groups have accomplished such adaptation.
